Your own week
When did you last actually want something?
Not open it. Want it, in advance, enough to be looking forward to it.
Two different weeks
A full week and a week with something in it are not the same thing. Most men in this position are not idle. The evenings go somewhere. The problem is that at the end of one, asked what he did, a man genuinely cannot say.
That is worth being accurate about, because it is not the same as having nothing to do and it does not have the same answer.
Worth being honest about
- What was the last thing you went to some trouble for?
- What was the last thing you looked forward to for more than a day?
- What do you do that you would still do if nobody ever knew about it?
- What did you fill last night with, and were you there for it?
- When something is free and instant, do you finish it?
- Is there anything you used to want that you have stopped wanting?
That last one is the one to take seriously, and not here. Losing interest in things you used to want is a doctor's question. Please treat it as one.
What this page refuses to do
It will not give you a plan, a challenge, a thirty-day anything, or a list of hobbies. It will not tell you to get off your phone, delete an app, take cold showers or go outside more. You have heard all of it, none of it worked, and being handed more suggestions is closer to the problem than the solution.
It also will not tell you what to want. Nobody can do that for another man and the ones who claim they can are selling something.
The one thing worth testing
Hold the observation against your own week: the things you still feel something about are usually the ones that cost you something to get to. See whether it is true of you. It may not be.
If it is, you have not been given a plan, but you have got a way of choosing — which is more than most men in this position have.
